Makes sense to me. My oldest son is over 6’5″ tall and he wears a size 15-16 shoe (depends on maker & style).
I suppose making GW’s shoes presented a bit of a challenge to the local shoemakers whose wooden molds probably ran closer to sizes 5-7.

I can commiserate–I have a 6’5, size 15 son as well! And in GW’s day, shoes didn’t come in left and right, which can’t have been very comfortable.
