Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

According to Herodotus, the Persian king, Xerxes (519 – 465 BC), expected cities along his army’s marching route to provide a day’s worth of meals. Many cities were brought to the point of ruin. The king’s immediate entourage consisted of fifteen thousand officers and family members, many of whom travelled by elephant.
